Solid Waste Operations Assistant

Job Summary

Assists the Superintendent in the supervision and implementation of the Boise County Solid Waste Program, as required under Idaho Statutes and Federal/State regulations. Evaluates personnel and equipment needs, as well as site and fleet maintenance, while overseeing site security, operations and collections. Maintains good working relationships and communication with the superintendent, employees, and the public, as well as other county employees. Establish a public image that reflects favorably on county employees in the use of county equipment, work ethics and public service attitude.

Responsibilities

• Assists and provides supervision to Boise County Solid Waste Department Employees; insures less skilled personnel comply with applicable safety and occupational health standards.
• Supervises contractor operations for collection and transportation of solid waste
• Supervises operations and maintenance of transfer station sites and buildings: Delegates project responsibilities to employees when necessary.
• Assists the Superintendent with personnel and inspects work to insure that workmanship conforms to specifications and that schedules are adhered to. Helps ensure all personnel follow Boise County Policies.
• Runs and maintains heavy equipment in the upkeep of transfer station grounds. Has the knowledge to operate and maintain various types of equipment.
• Hauls tires, batteries, waste oil, e-waste and other solid waste as necessary from transfer stations.
• Fills in as attendant for all 4 transfer stations in Boise County.
• Performs all duties with due regard to personal safety of employees and public.
• Attends meeting related to Boise County Solid Waste Program when necessary.
• Assists Superintendent with all operations to assure conformance with Federal and State Laws, as well as Local Ordinances. Coordinates department projects with Federal, State and Local Agencies as needed or required. Assists with preparing and submitting Operation Plans for Tier 2 solid waste facilities.
• Performs basic mechanic duties in support of the department.
• 608 Refrigerant Certification: Can be obtained after hire.

Experience

• Prior experience operating loaders, excavators, forklifts, or similar heavy machinery in manufacturing or outdoor environments is highly desirable
• Knowledge of solid waste management practices, landfill operations, or recycling processes is a plus
• Demonstrated ability to handle recyclable materials responsibly while adhering to hazardous materials regulations and safety protocols
• Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions with a focus on environmental compliance and sanitation standards
• Mechanical knowledge related to material handling equipment operation and maintenance is advantageous
• Strong understanding of safety regulations related to heavy equipment operation, hazardous materials handling, and outdoor work environments
• Proven ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as heavy lifting while maintaining attention to safety procedures

Pay: $19.62 - $21.77 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
