Job Description

--Scrap Yard Attendant & Processor--

What Makes This Position So Unique?

This position is not strictly production work. While there is a production/processing element, this position heavily relies on face-to-face customer interaction and computer know-how. It requires one to gain extensive knowledge of various grades/types of metals and to draw on that knowledge throughout the day.

What Exactly Would You Be Doing?

First, you would obtain an extensive knowledge of the various grades/types of scrap metals.

Then your duties would be as follows:

Customer Interaction

  • Use excellent customer service skills to greet customers and answer questions about scrap.
  • Evaluate & grade scrap material being purchased while using one’s vast knowledge of metals.
  • Use computer system to weigh incoming metals and record weights on customer scale ticket.
  • Ensure incoming loads do not contain inappropriate or unacceptable items.
  • Keep the customer scale in proper working order (i.e. lights work, zeros out properly, free of dirt/debris)
  • Follow all legal purchasing requirements, which include but are not limited to: checking ID, following company purchase policies, recording vehicle information, etc.
  • Quote pricing to customers using those set forth by management and/or verify correct pricing.
  • Maintain a general working knowledge of yard operations to ensure scale traffic flows smoothly.

Sorting & Processing

  • Separate purchased scrap metal into designated containers.
  • Operate a forklift or skid steer to move baskets, drums, boxes, containers, or pallets.
  • Dismantle scrap metals using shears, strippers, balers, and/or various hand tools.
  • Sort & classify processed scrap metals into their proper containments, in preparation for shipment.
  • Keep a clean work area around the shop and equipment.

  • Is willing to be trained to operate small heavy equipment (i.e. forklifts, skidsteers)

  • Must pass a drug test, physical, and background check to be considered for employment.

Working Conditions

This position carries out its duties both indoors and outdoors. Must be able to work sitting or standing for up to 8 hours per day. Must be comfortable working in both summer heat and Michigan winters and not be afraid to get a little dirty.
