SANITATION COLLECTION DRIVER
Position Type: Full-time; non-exempt
Starting Hourly Pay Rate: $21.61

About This Opportunity:
Performs semiskilled work collecting municipal solid waste, trash and recyclables, operating a sanitation truck and related equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Sanitation Collection Crew Leader.
Work schedule is Monday through Friday, working an 8-hour shift. The shift time will be either 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., or 7:00 a.m., as assigned. Uniform shirt and work boot voucher provided. Excellent opportunities for career growth.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience operating heavy equipment , or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Drives commercial sanitation truck.
- Assists with collecting brush and trash; operates knuckle boom truck, street sweeper, etc.; sets up work zones when necessary.
- Opens and closes recycling centers.
- Controls traffic flow in a bulk/brush zone.
- Repairs and/or replaces refuse containers.
- Delivers and picks up sway cars.
- Completes required paperwork.
- Performs pre-trip safety inspection daily.
- Performs general maintenance on vehicles and related equipment.
- Assists with snow and ice removal as needed.
- Assists with sanitation collection at special events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of City and Department policies and procedures.
- General knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Thorough knowledge in reading routes and maps.
- Thorough knowledge of City streets.
- General knowledge of and in the operation of the equipment required for the position.
- Some knowledge in preparing reports.
- General knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software.
- Ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to communicate in oral and written form.
- Ability to exercise good customer service skills.
- Ability to make arithmetic computations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience operating heavy equipment , or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of Class A commercial driver’s license valid in the State of Tennessee upon hire.
Physical Requirements:
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires standing and walking.
- Frequent speaking or hearing.
- Climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions.
- Occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
- Work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Regularly working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
- Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to vibration.
- Occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
