Education and Experience: A High School diploma or GED, or higher, and two (2) years of experience as a Solid Waste Truck Driver, Truck Driver, or Equipment Operator, including one (1) year of Solid Waste Industry experience.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.
Special Requirements: Incumbents of positions requiring a CDL or of a safety sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing, and may be required to pass physical qualification examinations in accordance with federal regulations.
General Purpose
Under general supervision, function as lead worker and assist with supervising, leading, guiding and participating in waste and recycling collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste or recycling materials.
Typical Duties
Independently operate solid waste collection trucks, or lead assigned crews on a regular designated route or to carry out special assignments. Involves: Perform pre-trip inspection of assigned equipment and report any safety hazard on equipment to immediate supervisor. Maintain vehicle fluid levels and cleanliness. Check and service refuse collection equipment to insure good operating condition. Drive, and manipulate pick up and off loading controls of solid waste collection vehicles. Handle and dispose of hazardous chemicals, materials, and dead animals. Collect trash, garbage and other discarded bulky items from residents or from illegal dumping areas. Manually lift and roll solid waste and recycling containers. Assist disabled customers by picking up trash container from side of residence. Report and tag garbage not picked up. Report sanitation code violations or obstructions to supervisor. Report vacant houses or businesses to supervisor as a means of keeping route book current. Prepare special collection tickets for limbs, appliances, furniture, or other items that cannot be picked up by regular crew. Service collection routes requiring storage bins or compactors. Operate equipment and vehicles requiring special skills to include but not limited to side loaders, rear loaders, front end loaders, roll-off truck, grapple and other types of refuse transport equipment.
