Job Description
Job Summary:
Performs a variety of duties related to the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of the City landfill in accordance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) rules and regulations for Municipal Solid Waste Management. Operates and maintains heavy equipment used in landfill operations, including crawler-type tractors, motor graders, scrapers, compactors, and water trucks. Monitors the working face of the landfill to help ensure proper placement and compaction of waste, assists with traffic control, and inspects loads for compliance with landfill requirements. Assists with scale house operations, including collecting landfill fees, processing customer transactions, and maintaining daily and monthly records and reports.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates heavy equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, scrapers, compactors, and water trucks in support of landfill operations.
- Performs daily inspections and basic maintenance of assigned equipment and reports mechanical issues or safety concerns.
- Assists with maintaining landfill roads, drainage areas, slopes, working areas, and other site improvements.
- Directs and controls traffic within the landfill to promote safe movement of vehicles and equipment.
- Inspects incoming loads at the working face to verify accordance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Rules and Regulations for Municipal Solid Waste Management as written in the Site Operating Plan.
- Climbs into trucks and trailers as needed to examine incoming waste loads.
- Assists with scale house operations, including collecting landfill fees and providing customer service.
- Maintains accurate records related to landfill activities, fees, loads, equipment, and other required information.
- Prepares and submits daily and monthly billing and operational reports.
- Performs general labor tasks such as mowing, retrieving wind-blown paper, building portable fence, moving pumps as needed, cleaning equipment, etc.
- Follows TCEQ requirements, City policies, safety procedures, and established landfill operating practices.
- Attends required waste screening courses, safety training, and other assigned training.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area
- Communicates with supervisors, coworkers, customers, contractors, and other individuals by telephone, two-way radio, and in person.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Work independently in the absence of supervision
- Communicate effectively with the public, city employees, and contractors in a courteous manner
- Climb on and off of equipment and operate the equipment for 6-12 hours per day, 7 days per week, if necessary
- Climb into trucks and trailers to examine loads
- Service equipment using proper tools
- Work outside in extreme or varying weather conditions
Requirements, training, education, and experience:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Must have knowledge of landfill operations and ability to read and write various records or reports
- Must have experience in heavy equipment operation
- Must have knowledge of common safety precautions necessary in the area of work assignment, and the physical strength and agility to do strenuous laboring tasks
Conditions of Employment:
The City of Corsicana has established the goal of a 100% drug and alcohol-free workplace. Applicants will be required to undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment. Must have and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record. Punctuality and regular attendance is required. Must satisfactorily complete a one-year probation period.
