Detroit Disposal & Recycling, LLC (DDR) is looking for a dependable, hardworking, and mechanically inclined General Laborer / Property Maintenance Technician to join our team.

This is a hands-on, physically active position involving a wide variety of tasks throughout our company property, equipment yard, and customer locations. Responsibilities range from general construction, landscaping, carpentry, painting, and power washing to operating yellow equipment, maintaining our facilities, cleaning up waste and oil spills, and assisting with repairs to customer property when damage occurs.

We’re looking for a versatile individual who can do a little bit of everything, work safely, and take pride in getting the job done right. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can identify problems, find practical solutions, and assist wherever needed to keep our operations running smoothly.

Job Responsibilities

Property Maintenance & General Labor

  • Perform general maintenance, cleanup, and upkeep throughout DDR’s property, equipment yard, and facilities.
  • Complete landscaping tasks, including mowing, trimming, weed control, snow removal and general groundskeeping.
  • Assist with construction projects, carpentry, minor repairs, and facility improvements.
  • Perform painting, surface preparation, and general refurbishment work.
  • Operate power washers to clean trucks, equipment, containers, concrete, and other surfaces.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Equipment Operation & Yard Work

  • Safely operate yellow equipment, such as skid steers, wheel loaders, backhoes and other machinery as qualified.
  • Assist with moving materials, debris, containers, and equipment throughout the yard.
  • Help maintain the condition and functionality of company property and equipment.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and moving materials as needed.

Spill Cleanup & Environmental Housekeeping

  • Clean up waste, oil spills, and other messes throughout the yard and at customer locations.
  • Follow proper procedures for handling, containing, and disposing of waste and spill materials.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas in compliance with company safety procedures.
  • Identify and report hazardous conditions, equipment issues, or property damage.

Customer Property Repairs & Field Assistance

  • Assist with repairs to customer property when damage occurs during DDR operations.
  • Perform basic carpentry, painting, landscaping, and other repair work as needed.
  • Travel to customer locations when necessary to complete maintenance, cleanup, or repair assignments.
  • Represent DDR professionally when working at customer sites.
  • Assist drivers, mechanics, and other departments with miscellaneous projects as needed.

General Support

  • Take on additional projects and responsibilities as assigned by management.
  • Assist with emergency cleanup, property maintenance, and time-sensitive assignments.
  • Work independently when appropriate while communicating with management regarding progress, problems, and completed work.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in general labor, construction, property maintenance, landscaping, or a similar hands-on role preferred.
  • Experience operating skid steers, wheel loaders, or other yellow equipment is a plus.
  • Basic carpentry, painting, and general repair skills preferred.
  • Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and power-washing equipment.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, bending, standing, and working outdoors.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions as reasonably required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle a variety of tasks throughout the day.
  • Reliable attendance, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on additional responsibilities.

What We’re Looking For

The right candidate is someone who:

  • Can do a little bit of everything and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty.
  • Takes initiative rather than waiting to be told what to do every step of the way.
  • Can identify a problem and help figure out how to fix it.
  • Takes pride in maintaining clean, organized, and professional-looking property.
  • Understands the importance of working safely around trucks, heavy equipment, and an active waste and recycling operation.
  • Is dependable, hardworking, and willing to help wherever needed.
  • Wants to develop additional skills and grow with a company.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive pay based on experience and qualifications.
  • Full benefits package.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • 401(k).
  • Consistent weekday schedule.
  • Opportunities to learn new trades, develop equipment-operating skills, and take on additional responsibilities.
  • Room for growth and advancement within the company.
