Job Description

Overview

Join our team at Waste Recovery Enterprises as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic and play a key role in keeping our refuse fleet running strong. You’ll work on roll-off trucks, garbage/refuse trucks, tractor-trailers, and other heavy-duty equipment that supports our daily operations. This is a hands-on shop role focused on real-world fleet maintenance—diagnosing issues, performing repairs, and completing preventive service so our trucks stay safe, reliable, and on the road. We’re looking for a skilled mechanic who knows heavy-duty diesels and thrives in a straightforward shop environment.

Duties

  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, air brake systems, suspension, steering, and electrical systems on roll-off trucks, garbage trucks, and tractor-trailers.
  • Perform preventive maintenance including oil and filter changes, greasing, inspections, tire service, and DOT compliance checks to maximize uptime and safety.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems (hoists, compactors, arms, cylinders, pumps, and valves) common on refuse and roll-off equipment.
  • Use diagnostic tools, schematics, technical manuals, and hands-on testing to identify and fix complex mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Fabricate or modify components as needed using welding and basic fabrication skills for truck bodies, frames, and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, parts records, and service logs; communicate job status with the shop and operations team.
  • Assist with other fleet repairs and shop tasks as needed while following all safety procedures.

Skills

  • Proven experience as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic, ideally with refuse, waste, roll-off, or commercial truck fleets.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, air brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy truck components.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and service manuals and use diagnostic software/scan tools.
  • Skilled with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and standard shop equipment.
  • Comfortable performing heavy lifting, working under and around trucks, and handling tire/brake/suspension work.
  • Good mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL Class A or B is a plus. ASE Medium/Heavy Truck or Diesel certifications preferred but not required.

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
