SOLID WASTE COLLECTOR - PART TIME

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, provides operational support to the Public Works Department.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

• Lift and load bulky waste items into solid waste collection vehicles including but not limited to furniture (couches, cabinets, sinks, appliances, tables, e-waste, etc.), minor construction materials (wood, decking material, wallboard), and yard waste. Assists in delivering collected material to the appropriate disposal facility.
• Ride on the back of a rear load garbage truck.
• Assist in loading appliances and electronic materials onto a Tommy lift to load into a flatbed appliance truck.
• Assist in using a power washer to clean garbage, recycling carts, and snow removal equipment.
• Assembles and makes repairs to garbage and recycling carts as necessary.
• Operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in such a manner as to prevent injury to self, coworkers, property, and equipment. Adheres to all City policies, procedures, and Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations, including wearing of all mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) to perform all job-related duties.
• Promptly reports any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to their immediate supervisor.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education:

• Requires a level of knowledge normally acquired through the successful completion of high school or a GED equivalency. The successful candidate must possess, and maintain throughout employment, a valid driver’s license.

Experience:

• Experience in waste management or heavy manual labor is preferred.

• Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
• Requires excellent interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with co-workers, other city employees, and respond to requests made by the public.
• Must be an effective team player and requires the ability to work independently.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Requires sustained constant lifting in excess of forty (40) pounds, twisting, throwing, or handling of bulky waste varying from ground height to approximately thirty-six inches (36”) height into packers. Repetition of handling averages 75 - 95 per hour.
• Frequent climbing on and off the packers ranging from one step to twenty-four inches (24”).
• Frequent pushing, pulling and grasping are required in the operation of dumping into the trucks, and operating truck controls.
• Performs the majority of work assignment outdoors in all weather conditions ranging from mild to severe.
• Daily exposed to garbage refuse and trash, which can include potentially hazardous chemicals, aerosols, sharp objects, flying debris and the like from refuse, recycling containers and the garbage packers.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Streets and Solid Waste Supervisor

Supervises: Not responsible for the supervision of other employees

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a year-round part-time position that ranges between 20 to 29 hours per week. The work schedule is generally 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hours may vary based on weather, flexible scheduling, or needs of the department.
