Job Description

Commodity Quality Supervisor — Recycling & Materials Processing

Full-time On-site, with travel between facilities

If the bale doesn't meet spec, you're the one who says so.

ERI is the largest fully integrated electronics recycler and IT asset disposition provider in the United States. Everything we shred and sort becomes a commodity — ferrous, non-ferrous, precious metals, plastics, batteries — sold to smelters, refineries, and downstream processors who hold us to exact specifications. We also buy material from suppliers and brokers who should be held to the same standard.

This role exists to tell the truth about material quality. You'll inspect what we produce and what we purchase, find contamination before a customer does, trace problems to their root cause, and have the standing to hold a load before it ships. Independence is the job — you report what you find, not what anyone hopes you'll find.

What You'll Own

  • Production quality. Run scheduled and unannounced inspections across commodity streams. Check bales, containers, and Super-sacks against spec before they ship, and confirm sorting, preparation, and packaging are being done right.
  • Purchased material. Inspect and verify commodities bought from suppliers and brokers against POs, contracts, and agreed samples. Document discrepancies with photos, measurements, and test results, and help track supplier quality over time.
  • Sampling and testing. Pull representative samples, coordinate assays and lab analysis, and review results against ERI and customer specifications. Investigate variances between expected and actual composition, recovery, or value.
  • Root cause and corrective action. When something goes wrong, document it objectively, scope the financial impact, work with Operations to find the cause, recommend the fix, and follow up to confirm it held.
  • Standards and specifications. Help build the written specs each commodity stream runs on — acceptable and non-acceptable material, contamination limits, packaging, sampling, documentation — plus inspection checklists and clear accept/reject criteria.
  • Yield and recovery monitoring. Watch for unusual shifts in composition, recovery, or yield, and help determine whether changes in feedstock, equipment, or process are behind them.
  • Customer quality support. Investigate complaints and rejected loads, compare customer findings against our own records, and translate customer specs into practical floor-level standards.
  • Training. Train facility personnel on quality standards and inspection technique, build SOPs and training materials, and mentor the people doing inspections day to day.

Your Authority

You can call for a load to be held, additional sampling, reprocessing or resorting, segregation or rejection, supplier inspection, or management review before shipment. Commercial decisions — pricing, settlements, disposition of disputed material — stay with Operations and Commodities. You are not selling commodities or negotiating price. Your job is an accurate, independent read on quality.

How Success Gets Measured

  • Customer rejection rates and quality claims trending down
  • Contamination rates down; commodity recovery and yield up
  • QC inspections completed on schedule and reported accurately
  • Corrective actions closed out, with recurring issues actually going away
  • Supplier quality performance improving

What You Bring

  • 3–5+ years in quality control, materials processing, recycling, commodities, manufacturing, or production
  • Hands-on inspection or audit experience — you can tell acceptable material from unacceptable material by looking at it
  • The independence to make objective calls and report them straight, including when it's unwelcome
  • Strong documentation habits and the ability to write up a finding clearly
  • Comfort analyzing data and spotting trends; solid Excel and Word
  • Ability to work with production personnel without compromising inspection objectivity
  • Willingness to spend real time on the production floor and travel between facilities

Nice to Have

  • Electronics recycling, e-waste, metals recovery, plastics, or battery processing experience
  • Familiarity with material specifications, assays, lab analysis, or downstream processing requirements
  • ISO, Lean, Six Sigma, or other quality management systems
  • Experience writing SOPs, inspection procedures, and quality standards
  • Root cause investigation and corrective action experience
  • Experience working across multiple production facilities

Why ERI

  • Genuine independence — the role is built to be objective, with the authority to back it up
  • Visible impact: your findings show up in recovery, commodity value, and claims avoided
  • Range across the whole material stream rather than one product line
  • Growing national company serving corporate and government clients
  • [Benefits — confirm with Benefits team]

Working Conditions

Industrial production environment with exposure to dust, noise, and processing equipment. Extended walking and standing, stair climbing and access throughout production areas, handling of samples and inspection materials, and required PPE. Time also spent in offices, warehouses, loading areas, and at supplier and customer sites. Reasonable accommodations provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Pre-employment screening required.
