Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:

Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Motor Equipment Operator III. This position requires incumbents to have a valid CDL license.

  • Operate complex construction and maintenance equipment including bulldozers, excavators, loaders, and off-road dump trucks in moving trash, grading, and maintaining the landfill workface and roads.
  • Operate tractor mowers, medium duty power mowers, chainsaws, and weed control devices for maintaining vegetation on landfill slopes, ditches, and grounds.
  • Operate roll-off container trucks for moving roll-off containers to and from convenience center.
  • Operate and maintain various dewatering pumps including gas and diesel.
  • Clean and perform daily checks and minor repairs on automotive equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs of leachate control system.
  • Assist in spotting and traffic control on the landfill work face and drop off areas.
  • Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by trucks

CDL Hiring Bonus:

Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:

  • $1,000 with first paycheck
  • $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim evaluation (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
  • $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation performance rating)

Non probationary employees with a Class A or Class B commercial driver’s license will be eligible for a $4,000 stipend (paid over 26 pay periods).

The City will verify that all employees and prospective employees are registered in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Preferences:

Possess valid VA or NC Commercial Driver's License
Knowledge of landfill regulations and experience working in a landfill environment; experience related to the operation of equipment and large trucks
Experience performing heavy manual work including lifting of heavy articles; experience working on slopes and constructing berms
Experience in general mowing operations
Knowledge of safety precautions when working around equipment and other dangerous conditions
Experience with and handling of household hazardous waste (HHW)
Storm water experience

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Requires completion of the tenth grade, plus three (3) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
