Job Description
Summary of Position: Under the supervision of the Director of Solid Waste, the employee performs a variety of administrative duties, which requires interpretation of and application of established policies, rules, and regulations. Ability to work independently on most aspects of work; check and weigh incoming loads, calculate fees, and direct drivers to appropriate locations. Because considerable public contact is involved, the employee demonstrates tact, good judgment, and patience.

- Monitors entrance to the landfill to ensure conformity with landfill operational requirement.
- Screens all loads brought to landfill to prevent admission of any potential hazardous substance or prohibited materials.
- Weighs materials, collects fees and issues receipts as required.
- Verifies, balances, and reconciles accounts and records.
- Creates and maintains files for customer account records, including database as directed.
- Performs administrative work including routine correspondence and reports.
- Recommends distribution and sorting of waste materials per policy.
- Greets the public and assists customers with landfill information.
- Prepares reports associated with landfill and waste management policies and procedures.
- Prepares and files requisitions, work orders, and purchase orders for assigned departments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of office methods and practices.
- A comprehensive knowledge of filing systems and basic cashiering techniques and practices.
- Must be skilled in report writing, including business English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and office terminology.
- Ability to prioritize work and complete assignments in a timely fashion.
- Must be skilled in various computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PC Scales, and related software applications.
- Possess the ability to deal courteously, effectively, and cooperatively with the public and other employees, especially in situations that require tact and discretion, and when answering questions in person and over the telephone.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in identifying and overseeing confidential information and the importance of maintaining confidentiality.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays.
Education and Experience: Completion of high school or equivalent and one (1) year of administrative experience; landfill or hazardous duty waste screening experience desirable, knowledge or municipal recycling and refuse collection practices. Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Equipment and Tools Utilized: Telephone, computer, printer, scanner, copier, fax machine, Laserfiche, calculator and other common office equipment.
