Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
To perform skilled work in the driving and operation of waste collection vehicles with hoist mechanism used to pick up large roll-off type containers.
Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.
Operates a waste collection vehicle equipped with hoist mechanism for picking up large containers (20, 30, and 40 cubic yards). Transports recyclables to companies for processing, unloads the contents, and returns the container to recycling center. Receives and follows an assigned daily route for material collection; completes special collections as assigned; drives truck to the Recycling Center to unload recyclables in designated areas as directed by facility personnel; Operates the scale to obtain weight of materials unloaded.
Operates material handling equipment, i.e., skid-steer loader, forklift, and material baler.
Operates various commercial collection vehicles, i.e., frontload, roll-off and container delivery truck.
Performs waste screening at the pickup point and reports un-collectible or hazardous materials to the supervisor.
Interacts with public to provide information on recycling, composting, waste reduction, and facilities use. Monitors drop-off activities by public and directs placement of recyclable materials in proper containers.
Recovers containers and materials at designated sites and inspects material for cross contamination.
Operates vehicle and equipment at the Recycling Center according to the Site Operations Plan.
Operates the waste collection vehicle in high-risk traffic conditions; remains alert to surrounding environment and potential safety hazards; collects materials in a safe manner, assuring the safety of collection personnel and the general public.
Performs operator level or preventive maintenance on assigned vehicle and equipment. Cleans the cab and washes the collection vehicle.
Trains and instructs others in the use of the vehicle and hoist equipment.
Reports all accidents or injuries to the supervisor immediately. Completes reports as required.
Complies with safety rules, policies, and procedures. Uses and wears personal protective equipment and clothing and complies with safe working controls.
Maintains radio or other communications with the supervisor and/or office.
Makes special collections as assigned.
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and complies with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must have a valid Texas CDL (Class B) License.
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including container hoist, trash compactor, air impact wrench, common hand tools, air jack and safety equipment.

The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
