Job Description:
The Wastewater Operator-in-Training (OIT) assists with the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of wastewater treatment systems while receiving training required to become a certified wastewater operator. The position supports plant operations and equipment maintenance to ensure safe and efficient treatment of wastewater in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Essential Functions:
Plant Operations
- Assist with operation of wastewater treatment systems including pumps, motors, blowers, aeration systems, and chemical feed systems
- Monitor treatment processes and make adjustments under supervision of a certified operator
- Record plant data including flow rates, pressures, chemical usage, and system performance
- Monitor alarms and respond to operational issues
Sampling and Laboratory Testing
- Collect wastewater samples for laboratory testing
- Perform routine testing including pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorine residual, and total suspended solids
- Maintain accurate meter readings and calibration logs
Equipment Maintenance
- Assist with preventative maintenance of plant equipment
- Inspect pumps, valves, motors, and piping
- Clean clarifiers, filters, screens, and tanks
- Report mechanical issues to maintenance staff or supervisors
Compliance and Documentation
- Maintain operational logs required for regulatory compliance
- Assist with regulatory reporting and inspections
- Follow all safety procedures and plant operating policies
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must obtain Alabama Wastewater Operator Grade II certification with 18 months.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work in a standing position for the majority of the shift.
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
- Must possess a valid driver license and a driving record suitable for insurability.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work around mechanical equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Mechanical or electrical aptitude
- Experience in utilities, environmental services, or industrial operations
- Basic knowledge of pumps, motors, and process systems

Pay: $19.00 - $21.00 per hour
