Full Job Description
Newberry Township is seeking a Public Works Wastewater Plant Operator to assist with the operation, inspection, maintenance, testing, and repair of the Township’s wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, sanitary sewer collection system, and related public works infrastructure.
This is a hands-on position involving plant operations, process monitoring, equipment maintenance, sampling, basic testing, pump station inspections, sewer system maintenance, emergency response, and general public works duties.
Key Responsibilities
Operate, inspect, and maintain wastewater treatment plant equipment and systems
Monitor treatment processes and perform routine sampling and testing
Inspect and maintain pumps, motors, valves, floats, alarms, generators, and related equipment
Assist with preventive maintenance and repairs at the plant, pump stations, and collection system
Assist with sewer line cleaning, CCTV inspections, manhole maintenance, and backup response
Perform PA One Call mark-outs and field inspections as needed
Safely operate Township vehicles, tools, and equipment
Respond to plant alarms, sewer backups, pump station alarms, severe weather, and other emergencies
Record inspections, testing, maintenance, and repairs in the Township’s maintenance system
Perform general public works duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Valid Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license at time of hire
Ability to obtain PA CDL Class B with air-brake and tanker endorsement within 12 months
Township-paid CDL training and testing
Required Certifications
Employer-provided training and certification support will be provided.
Confined Space Entry within 12 months
PA DEP Wastewater Operator – Class B, Subclass 1 within 48 months
PA DEP Wastewater Collections Operator – Class E, Subclass 4 within 48 months
Current wastewater certification or prior wastewater treatment experience is preferred but not required.
Skills & Requirements
Strong mechanical ability and safe use of hand and power tools
Ability to work safely around equipment, traffic, confined spaces, wastewater, and chemicals
Basic computer skills for work orders, inspections, testing records, and email
Ability to read maps, plans, utility markings, manuals, and basic schematics
Dependable, safety-focused, and willing to learn and obtain required certifications
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds
Must be able to wear required PPE, including respirator equipment when required
Schedule
Full-time, 40 hours per week
Day shift
Participation in an on-call rotation required
Overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs as needed
