Job Purpose
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for daily compaction and cover of waste within the County Landfill. This position will be a team member within the Landfill department playing an important role by ensuring that safety is a priority and regulations are being followed. Within this role the candidate will be expected to be dependable and a team player working to accomplish daily goals in a productive manner.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Operates any or all core equipment to push, compact, grade, load or haul waste or dirt to achieve appropriate grading and compaction in the landfill. Core equipment includes bulldozers, compactors, excavators, articulated trucks, loaders and graders.
- Performs daily equipment inspections in accordance with landfill procedures ensuring equipment is in proper working condition.
- Inspects contents of waste being disposed to determine compliance with the County’s recycling ban and to ensure the exclusion of hazardous waste or other prohibited items from the landfill.
- Advises and educates users of the landfill to state, federal and local recycling and disposal rules, regulations and procedures. Enforces rules, regulations and procedures relating to the landfill for all landfill users.
- Performs the daily cover of the MSW working face so that trash is not left exposed.
- Operates water truck as needed for dust control purposes
- Performs spotter duties for traffic control and safety at the landfill
- Performs daily ground keeping duties around the landfill site and roadways to include picking up wind-blown refuse and maintaining vehicular access to all disposal and processing areas
- Performs housekeeping duties in the Maintenance building to include cleaning workstations, breakrooms, bathrooms and storage areas
- Performs other job related duties as trained and assigned.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. Associate's Degree or further education preferred.
Experience: At least 1 year of heavy equipment operating experience required. Experience in heavy equipment operating within a landfill setting is preferred.
Computer Skills: Must have a basic to intermediate functional knowledge of computers.
License/Credentials: Possession of a valid driver's license.

Health Insurance - Full-time employees are eligible for medical/health (Cigna Insurance) benefits upon the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment.
Alamance County Government currently offers three plans of medical/pharmacy benefit options including 2 Standard PPO plans and a High-Deductible Health Plan with HSA.
Dental Benefit - Alamance County offers one dental insurance (Delta Dental) plan for FT employees at no cost. The plan, if elected, would be effective the first of the month following 30 days of FT employment.
Vision Insurance - A voluntary vision program (Superior Vision) is available to FT employees. The current PPO style plan allows employees to seek treatment and hardware from any vision care provider of their choice. The plan, if elected, would be effective the first of the month following 30 days of FT employment. Coverage must be elected within your first 30 days of FT employment or upon a qualifying event.

Retirement Benefits - Membership in the NC Local Government Employees Retirement System (NCLGERS) is a requirement for all full-time and regular part-time employees (working more than 1,000 hours annually). Employees contribute six percent (6%) of their annual compensation before it is taxed.
Time Off Accruals:
Vacation Time – Annual Leave is accrued based on years of service. Employees can accrue from 10-25 days per year.
Sick Time – All County full time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year.
County Observed Holidays – Alamance County will observe the State of North Carolina Holiday Schedule.

Retired employees under age 65 are also eligible to use the health center. Depending on insurance coverage elected, care at the clinic ranges from free to a fair market value cost.
