Job Description - Material Handler Operator
Gondola Car Unloading / C&D Material Handling
Position Summary: Operate a material handler and related heavy equipment to safely unload gondola railcars and handle construction and demolition (C&D) material at the C&D facility. This position is responsible for safe railcar unloading, material sorting/placement, equipment inspections, housekeeping, communication with site personnel, and supporting daily landfill and facility operations.
Responsibilities
· Timely and regular attendance is essential.
· Operate a material handler to unload C&D material from gondola railcars in a safe, controlled, and efficient manner.
· Position, sort, stockpile, load, and move material as directed by site management.
· Maintain awareness of railcar conditions, surrounding equipment, ground personnel, traffic, overhead hazards, and changing site conditions while unloading.
· Perform daily equipment walk-around inspections and site inspections to identify unsafe conditions, maintenance needs, leaks, damage, or operating concerns.
· Keep equipment clean, fueled, greased, and properly maintained; report repair needs promptly.
· Follow company safety policies, standard operating procedures, and safe equipment operating practices at all times.
· Use hand and foot controls safely and accurately to operate the material handler and other assigned equipment.
· Assist with excavator, articulated dump truck, loader, grader, or other heavy-equipment tasks as needed.
· Maintain haul roads, unloading areas, stockpile areas, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
· Communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, truck drivers, scale house personnel, and rail personnel when needed.
· Troubleshoot and report issues involving material quality, railcar unloading, equipment operation, safety concerns, or production delays.
· Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or upper management.
Requirements
· Experience operating a material handler, excavator, loader, or similar heavy equipment preferred.
· Ability to safely unload C&D material from gondola railcars.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment.
· Ability to follow safe working procedures and company operating policies.
· Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
· Ability to move/lift up to 50 lbs. as needed throughout the workday.
· Ability to bend, stoop, climb, reach, and work around heavy equipment and uneven ground.
· Basic measurement and calculation skills.
· Excellent observation skills and strong attention to detail.
· Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Effective verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a team.
· Ability to speak, read, and write English.
· Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Work Environment
· Work is performed in a landfill/C&D facility setting.
· Position requires exposure to dirt, dust, odors, noise, vibration, moving equipment, railcars, uneven ground, and weather extremes during most of the workday.
· Position may involve occasional exposure to occupational risks such as cuts, burns, equipment hazards, or potential contact with waste-related materials.
