Excavator Operator (Onsite)

Pay: $20.00–$24.00 per hour

Job Description

RTX Recycling LLC is seeking a reliable and safety-conscious Excavator Operator to join our recycling yard operations team. This position is primarily responsible for operating an excavator equipped with attachments such as a grapple, magnet, bucket, or shear to move, sort, load, and process recyclable materials.

The Excavator Operator plays an important role in maintaining safe and efficient yard operations, properly separating materials, loading trucks and processing equipment, and preventing damage to machinery and surrounding property.

The ideal candidate has experience operating excavators or similar heavy equipment in a recycling yard, scrapyard, construction, demolition, or industrial environment. Candidates must be attentive, dependable, and comfortable working outdoors around heavy machinery.

Key Responsibilities

Excavator Operations

• Safely operate an excavator to move, sort, stack, and load scrap metal and other recyclable materials.
• Use attachments such as grapples, magnets, buckets, or shears based on operational needs.
• Load and unload trucks, trailers, containers, crushers, balers, and other processing equipment.
• Separate materials by type and place them in designated areas.
• Maintain awareness of workers, vehicles, equipment, and overhead or ground-level hazards.
• Follow signals and instructions from yard personnel and supervisors.

Equipment Inspection and Maintenance

• Perform daily pre-operation and post-operation equipment inspections.
• Check fluid levels, tracks, hoses, attachments, warning indicators, and safety systems.
• Report leaks, unusual noises, mechanical problems, or equipment damage immediately.
• Perform basic cleaning, greasing, and routine maintenance as assigned.
• Keep the excavator cab and surrounding work areas clean and organized.

Production and Yard Support

• Move materials efficiently to support daily production and shipping targets.
• Assist with organizing inventory and maintaining clear traffic and work areas.
• Minimize material contamination and equipment damage during handling.
• Complete equipment inspection forms and operational logs when required.
• Support other yard duties during downtime, as directed by management.

Safety and Compliance

• Follow all company safety procedures and equipment operating guidelines.
• Wear required personal protective equipment at all times.
• Maintain safe distances from employees, customers, vehicles, and other machinery.
• Stop operations immediately if an unsafe condition is identified.
• Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and operational briefings.

Qualifications

• Previous experience operating an excavator or similar heavy equipment is strongly preferred.
• Experience in a scrapyard, recycling facility, demolition site, construction site, or industrial yard is a plus.
• Ability to safely operate equipment in tight and active work areas.
• Familiarity with excavator attachments such as grapples, magnets, buckets, or shears is preferred.
• Basic knowledge of equipment inspections and preventative maintenance.
• Strong attention to safety, surroundings, and material handling.
• Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with yard personnel.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
